Brass instruments have got this name owing to the material which was applied from the ancient centuries. Nowadays people also get to apply copper and silver in the producing of these musical instruments. In the Middle Ages people produced the same instruments using basically wood because many people weren't able to make it of brass. French horn, tuba, trumpet, cornet, trombone and flugelhorn are included to the modern family of brass instruments.

An art of blowing a horn or a shell was invented in the ancient times. Afterwards people decided to do peculiar musical instruments of metal that were alike bugles. Those instruments were intended for martial, hunting and divine purposes.

The predecessors of contemporary brass instruments were hunting horns, military horns and post pipes. Such instruments could only produce natural scale sounds because at those times there weren't valve gear in them. A musician changed the timber of sound only with the help of his lips. Fanfares and other martial and hunting sounds appeared factually at that time. They were founded on the natural scale and firmly settled in musical art.

With the developing of metal working process and the production musical instruments of metal it became possible to create pipes of different sizes and finishing. The term “natural instruments” appeared with the progress of brass instruments production and the betterment of diverse natural scales. There were no valve instruments, that is why such musical instruments could perform only natural scale. Guilds of trumpeters appeared at those times. At that age two brotherhoods of trumpeters existed: martial pipers who played military songs and chambers trumpeters that played in castles.

XIX century became the age when valve mechanism was invented. The technique of performing was changed due to this invention and the ability of scales was heightened. An extra crown was placed in the basic pipe, it heightened the dimension of an instrument and lowered its pitch.
